The inside is coated in cream slip and splashed with copper green, a finish known as spugnato ("sponged"). The green runs and pools in the glaze firing, so no two bowls are the same. The outside is left in the plain honey-coloured glaze. Larger versions of this form, called catini, were everyday kitchen bowls in Tuscan and Umbrian farmhouses, used for kneading, mixing and washing. This smaller size was made for serving.

It suits olives, salt or fruit at the table, or can sit on a kitchen shelf alongside other country pottery.

Origin: Italy
Sourced in: Parma
Era: c.1950s–1970s
Materials: Glazed terracotta with cream slip and green spugnato decoration
Dimensions: Dia 17 cm
Condition: Good vintage condition, with glaze wear and small firing marks consistent with age and use.
