1960s Italian Rattan Basket with Looped Cane Detail and Arched Handle
A substantial and sculptural Italian rattan basket from the 1960s, standing over 90cm tall with its arched handle raised. At this scale, it stops being a basket and becomes a room object — the kind of piece that anchors a corner, holds a collection of dried stems or pampas, or simply stands alone as sculpture.
The cylindrical body is formed from two tiers of rhythmically looped and bent cane — a sinuous, almost architectural detail that speaks to the extraordinary level of craft coming out of Italian rattan workshops in this period. Four slender legs give it a light, elevated stance, and the sweeping arched handle completes the form with the generous curve characteristic of the best Lombard rattan work of the era, in the tradition of Bonacina and Franco Albini.
At this height, it works beautifully as a floor piece: a generous fruit or bread basket for a large kitchen or dining room, a fireside log holder, or simply filled with branches or dried botanicals as a living room focal point.
The looped cane work is intact and structurally sound — a testament to the quality of the original making.
Condition: Good vintage condition consistent with age. Minor darkening to the cane at the base, typical of use and patina. Structurally solid throughout.
