Barovier & Toso Murano Flower Wall Sconces , 1950s
Product Description
These exquisite 1950s wall sconces by Barovier & Toso showcase the legendary Murano glassmaker's mastery of naturalistic design. Each fixture features delicate hand-blown flowers in a sophisticated palette of pink, green, powder blue, and clear glass—every petal individually crafted and attached to the metal frame with precision screws. This labor-intensive construction method exemplifies the "fabulous quality and craftsmanship" that made Barovier & Toso one of the world's most respected glassmakers, operating continuously since 1295.
The multi-colour palette reflects 1950s sensibility when Ercole Barovier, the company's visionary artistic director, was exploring vibrant chromatic combinations alongside traditional techniques. These sconces embody Barovier & Toso's "Liberty Style"—the Italian interpretation of Art Nouveau—where thick glass petals, leaves, and organic forms created naturalistic ornament that brought elegance to mid-century interiors. Each 18cm fixture balances substantial presence with delicate beauty, transforming functional lighting into sculptural art.

Design Information
These wall sconces were created by Barovier & Toso in Murano, Italy during the 1950s, an era when the company—under Ercole Barovier's nearly 50-year artistic directorship—perfected the marriage of traditional Venetian glassmaking with modernist sensibility. Founded in 1295 when Jacobello Barovier began the family's glassmaking dynasty, Barovier & Toso represents one of the world's oldest continuously operating family businesses and remains among Murano's most prestigious manufacturers. The flower motif reflects the Liberty Style (Italian Art Nouveau) that characterised much of Barovier & Toso's decorative lighting, where naturalistic glass elements—leaves, fronds, and flower petals—created organic beauty through centuries-old mouth-blowing techniques. Each flower was individually hand-blown, shaped while molten, and carefully positioned before being mechanically secured to ensure longevity. The multi-colour palette demonstrates the technical mastery required to control glass temperatures and colour saturation across different hues within a single fixture.
