Designer Information

Franco Albini (1905-1977) stands as one of Italy’s most celebrated architects and designers, a founding figure of the Italian Neo-Rationalist movement. Born in Robbiate near Milan, Albini graduated from the Politecnico di Milano in 1929 and apprenticed under the legendary Gio Ponti before establishing his own practice in 1931.
Albini’s genius lay in his ability to merge Italian artisanal traditions with modernist principles. His collaboration with Vittorio Bonacina, beginning in the 1950s, produced some of his most iconic works, including the award-winning Margherita chair (1951), which earned him a Gold Medal at the IX Milan Triennale. Working alongside his frequent collaborator Franca Helg, Albini created furniture that embodied what he called “extreme purity of expression” - designs that were minimalist yet warm, contemporary yet respectful of traditional craft.
Throughout his career, Albini received three prestigious Compasso d’Oro awards (1955, 1958, 1964) and was named an Honorary Royal Designer for Industry by the Royal Society of Arts in London. His work is held in the permanent collections of MoMA New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Vittorio Bonacina, founded in Lurago d’Erba in Brianza, specialized in handcrafted rattan and bamboo furniture. The company became synonymous with Italian Riviera style - organic, sculptural pieces that captured the essence of Mediterranean leisure while maintaining exceptional craftsmanship.
