Product Description

This exceptional 1970s cocoon pendant represents a rare and sought-after variation of Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni's iconic lighting design—a round sphere with subtle yellow striping that distinguishes it from the standard honey-beige examples found in most collections. While countless beige cocoon pendants were produced during the 1960s and early 1970s, these colourful striped variants were specialty pieces that appeared in limited numbers, making this an opportunity to own something genuinely uncommon.

The canopy is original to the piece, maintaining period authenticity. The cable has been professionally replaced and checked by our electrician for safety and functionality.

Versatility

The yellow striping adds a layer of versatility that plain beige cocoons lack—this piece works beautifully in both period-authentic settings and contemporary interiors seeking a pop of subtle color.

  • Yellow striping coordinates with: brass fixtures, honey-toned wood, mustard textiles, warm ceramics
  • Contrasts beautifully with: cool grays, navy, charcoal, black accents
  • Complements: other Castiglioni pieces, Italian design, Scandinavian furniture, vintage textiles
  • Bulb selection: Warm white LED (2700K) enhances yellow tones

Condition

Slight tear in resin coating has been repaired (visible in photos). Some vintage wear consistent with 50+ years of age and surface may show minor marks/discolouration.

Patina variations add character.

Design Information

Attributed to the legendary Castiglioni brothers and consistent with Italian production from the early 1970s, this pendant showcases the revolutionary spray-resin "cocoon" technique developed by Arturo Eisenkeil. The process involved coating a metal frame structure with a special vinyl resin originally created by the US Navy, then applying decorative striping while the material was still workable—a technique requiring precise timing and skilled application.

The yellow stripes create gentle vertical channels across the spherical form, adding visual rhythm and decorative interest while maintaining the soft, diffused light quality that made cocoon lighting famous. When illuminated, the stripes create subtle variations in light intensity, producing a warm, layered glow that's more dynamic than solid-colored versions.
