Product Description

This exceptional wall shelf represents one of Franco Albini’s most celebrated organic furniture designs, produced by Vittorio Bonacina during the golden era of Italian mid-century modernism. Albini’s wall shelves exemplify his philosophy of “extreme purity of expression” - achieving maximum visual impact and functionality through minimal means. The curved rattan construction demonstrates the extraordinary skill of Bonacina’s artisans, who bent and shaped natural materials into sculptural forms that appear effortless yet required decades of mastery to execute.

Design information

The Albini-Bonacina Collaboration
Franco Albini’s partnership with Vittorio Bonacina began in the early 1950s and produced some of the most iconic furniture of the mid-century period. While Albini is best known for the award-winning Margherita chair (1951), his smaller pieces - wall shelves, mirrors, and accessories - demonstrate the same mastery of natural materials and are increasingly sought after by collectors.
The 1960s marked the peak of this collaboration, when Bonacina’s workshops in Lurago d’Erba were producing furniture that defined the Italian Riviera aesthetic. Each piece required hours of skilled handwork, transforming humble bamboo and rattan into sophisticated modern furniture.

Historical Context
These wall shelves appeared regularly in Italian design publications of the 1960s, including Domus magazine, which documented Albini’s complete body of work. They represented a new approach to storage - sculptural, space-efficient, and beautiful enough to display openly rather than hide away.
