The Blue Spiral

This is a large serving bowl in glazed ceramic, made in Italy in the 1990s. The inside is painted by hand, with a deep cobalt band around the rim and a pale blue spiral in the well. The brushstrokes are left visible, so each line of the spiral shows where it was painted. The outside is plain white with a softly scalloped edge. Two twisted rope handles are applied at either side. This style of painted ceramic is closely associated with the coastal workshops of southern Italy.

It works well for fruit, salads or pasta at the table.
