Claudio Pulli Ceramic Vase, Mottled Polychrome Glaze, Sardinia, Italy, c.1970s
Pulli in Miniature
A small ceramic vase by Claudio Pulli, made in Sardinia in the 1970s. The form pairs a rounded, near-spherical body with a tall cylindrical neck, finished in Pulli's characteristic heavy polychrome glaze — mottled ochre, rust, olive and mustard, broken by vertical runs of orange-red where the glaze has flowed and pooled. The surface is textural rather than smooth, each piece coming out of the kiln a little differently.
Pulli (b. Lecce, 1929) trained at the Art Institute of Sassari and then at Faenza, and is regarded as one of the foremost Sardinian ceramicists of the twentieth century; much of his output was produced for I.S.O.L.A., the Sardinian craft institute. His work is collected for exactly this quality of glaze. A small piece that reads well on a shelf, mantel or grouped with other ceramics.
