Pair of Elio Martinelli 'Bolla' Wall Lights for Martinelli Luce, Opal Methacrylate, Italy, c.1960s
The Bolla Pair, Labelled
A pair of 'Bolla' wall lights designed by Elio Martinelli for Martinelli Luce, the Lucca firm Martinelli founded in 1950. First produced in 1960, the Bolla — "bubble" — is one of the studio's defining designs: a square diffuser of opal-white methacrylate that swells into a soft dome, held at each corner by a rotating brushed-aluminium spacer over a white lacquered backplate. Lit, it reads as a bubble of light lifting off the surface. Both pieces retain the Martinelli Luce label.
