The Riviera Globe

This is a small pendant light made in Italy in the 1960s. A globe of bent bamboo is bound at each crossing with rattan strips. Inside it hangs a cylindrical paper shade in warm orange. The pendant hangs from a chain of looped rattan links. When lit, the shade casts a warm glow through the open cage, and the bamboo throws a lattice of shadows onto the surrounding walls. The style is associated with the Italian Riviera, where rattan and bamboo lighting was popular throughout the 1960s.

At 22 cm across, it suits a kitchen, a hallway or a bathroom. It also works hung low over a side table.
