The Handled Rectangle

A squared basket in rattan and woven wicker, banded and rimmed in polished brass, with a pair of upright brass loop handles. Made in Italy in the 1970s. The braided band around the body and the substantial brass handles lift it above the plainer baskets of the period — it reads as a centrepiece rather than simply storage.

Part of the mid-century Italian tradition of pairing woven natural fibre with brass, associated with Gabriella Crespi. Unsigned, as is usual for this workshop production. Works as a fruit bowl, a centrepiece, or on a console to hold odds and ends.
