The Two Birds

A mid-century ceramic charger decorated with two confronting birds — an old heraldic arrangement, here drawn in a folk-modern hand. The design is incised into the surface in the sgraffito manner and filled with matte glaze: the birds in lilac and aubergine with yellow crests, set against a deep teal ground, flanking a central rosette. 

Incised, brightly glazed pottery of this kind was made across mid-century Europe — the sgraffito bird motif appears in Scandinavian, Italian and Greek works alike.
