Small Murano Glass Vase, Orange and Yellow with Millefiori Murrine, Italy, c.1960s–1970s
The Marigold
This small, heavy vase was blown on Murano in the 1960s or 1970s. Fragments of orange and yellow glass are fused into a mottled body, and the colour is drawn up into a swirl at the neck. Three millefiori murrine are set into the surface. These are slices of patterned glass cane, each showing a star motif in white, blue and red. The whole piece is cased in thick clear glass, which is deepest at the base and gives it a solid, paperweight-like weight. The rim was pinched into a soft, folded lip while the glass was hot.
