Product Description

This elegant Tilos lamp represents Ernesto Gismondi’s minimalist design philosophy during Artemide’s postmodern period of the 1980s-90s. Gismondi, who founded Artemide in 1960 and served as both president and chief designer, created the Tilos as a versatile lighting solution that could function equally well as a wall sconce, ceiling fixture, or—with appropriate base—a table lamp. The 20cm diameter translucent orange glass shade creates warm, diffused ambient light while the compact 12cm depth allows installation in spaces where projection is limited.

The distinctive orange colorway sets this piece apart from the more common white glass versions, adding visual warmth and 1980s character to contemporary or period interiors. When illuminated, the translucent glass “shimmers in the light,” creating atmospheric glow that transforms stark spaces into inviting environments. This chromatic boldness reflects Artemide’s willingness to experiment with color during an era when Italian design embraced postmodern playfulness alongside functional minimalism.

Versatility

Originally designed for wall or ceiling mounting, this lamp adapts beautifully to multiple applications. As a wall sconce, it provides elegant ambient lighting in hallways, bedrooms, bathrooms, or living spaces. Ceiling-mounted, it works perfectly above dining tables, in compact kitchens, or low-ceiling areas requiring flush fixtures. With appropriate rewiring and base addition, it functions as a distinctive table lamp for desks, nightstands, or side tables. The orange glass complements warm color schemes, wood tones, brass fixtures, and both mid-century and contemporary furnishings. Ideal for apartments, boutique hotels, restaurants, or residential spaces seeking Artemide quality at accessible pricing.

Condition

Good vintage condition with translucent orange glass intact and shimmering beautifully. No chips or cracks to glass shade. Metal mounting components structurally sound. Requires rewiring and plug attachment for safe modern use—we can arrange this service (please contact us for details).

Design Information

This Tilos lamp was designed by Ernesto Gismondi for Artemide during the 1980s-1990s in Italy. Gismondi founded Artemide in 1960 and led the company’s evolution from a small Milan workshop into one of the world’s most influential lighting manufacturers. As both president and designer, Gismondi created numerous iconic pieces while championing collaborations with renowned designers.

The Tilos exemplifies his minimalist approach—clean geometric forms, quality materials, and versatile functionality. The translucent Murano-style glass demonstrates Artemide’s commitment to Italian craft traditions while the adaptable mounting system reflects practical modernist sensibility.

Orange versions are less common than white, making this a distinctive example of 1980s-90s postmodern Italian design when colour re-entered the minimalist palette.
