The Palermo Sun
A small hand-painted ceramic ashtray by Giovanni DeSimone (1930–1991) of Palermo, signed and dated 1964 to the base. The smiling sun with ochre petals and pink cheeks is one of the most recognisable motifs from his Sicilian studio, founded in the 1960s and known for its bright, naive linework. Each piece was decorated by hand, so no two are alike. The sponged cobalt rim frames the motif well.
As happy holding rings or keys as it is serving its original purpose.
