The White Basket

This is a large ceramic bowl made in Italy in the 1970s, finished in a white glaze. The outside is worked by hand in rows of raised, overlapping marks, which give it the texture of woven rope or basketwork. The inside is smooth and glossy. The rim is softly squared, so from above the bowl reads as a rounded square rather than a circle. The base is stamped "Made in Italy".

It can be used for fruit on a kitchen bench or dining table, or as a catch-all on a console. It also stands on its own as a sculptural piece on a shelf.
